How has online news affected print news?


Clickbait: the use of sensational headlines or images to attract clickthroughs on a website.

The Observer online follows the structure of its print edition, but there is far more prominence on lifestyle, food and sport stories. These areas don’t tend to dominate the front cover of a print edition. There are also more images/use of photography on the homepage.

The observer are still owed by the Scott Trust though:

Print:
  • Print versions provide much more detail on front page. Print is better technology for detailed writing. So easier to see
  • Allows for much more varieties of layout as it is has a larger layout compared to online 
  • Advertisers can be offered a range of display to be shown could get more space.
  • Can include larger photos as much more space.
  • many more opportunities of synergy therefore higher probability of purchasing a newspaper

Online:
  • The homepages do not have as much detail as it is usually only one story not a few different ones.
  • Online ones a restricted by the size of story so it is limited.
  • When viewing on a phone readers are limited by the images that are seen due to the size of the screen
  • Advertisements are quite small so it is hard for them to gain exposure.
Funding

  • The are paper and digital subscriptions
  • Can have a subscription on a kindle 
  • Cross- promotion: they advertise their sister magazine the guardian weekly.
  • they gain funding from advertising
  • They run events. e.g. courses, meetings and conferences. for members
  • They sell holidays on the travel sections
Advantages of online technology:
  • Its free
  • reaches a larger audience as can be anywhere
  • more sustainable for environment
  • easy to share to friends and families
  • Can build relationships from comments 
  • can be updated immediately 
  • Don't have to leave to get it.
  • saves time
  • the algorithm will change depending on your likes
Differences between the website and paper newspaper.
  • The newspaper includes much more detailed text whereas the homepage short statements which summarises the story.
  • The newspaper has one main image and focuses mainly on that story suggesting that it has more importance and a few others whereas the website homepage contains many different images not giving one a higher value than other. 
  • More stories are featured in the website than the newspaper front cover
Similarities
  • Both contain the same two main headlines and are the same size
  • Still both have the same colour scheme of the dark blue.
  • They have the same main two stories
